"The Dark Lining", Santa Monica Museum of Art
Evolution is the second in a series of large scale video collages and the first work to be executed in stereoscopic 3D. The history of humankind is illustrated as a vast side-scrolling video mural depicting the spectacle of human conflict across time through the lens of cinema. The source material is genre film; the samples are looped and combined in a remix that seamlessly moves through past, present, and future providing a satirical take on
the bombast of the big-budget "epic."

Stealth" wasn't merely a commercial for the launch of Verizon's Droid smartphone. "It was our D-Day," said Mark Koelfgen, executive creative director of New York's mcgarrybowen, the agency that created the epic spot, which was meant to resemble an invasion. Director Rupert Sanders of MJZ, and VFX shop Asylum orchestrated the awe-inspiring invasion. Sanders said he sought to make the spot "feel like a movie trailer." Q Department composed a music track that was designed to heighten moments of suspense. Koelfgen is thrilled everything came together so well in such a short time. When Verizon came to the agency, "They had a handset and a dream, and that was it.

Q DEPARTMENT KICKS OFF "THE DIRECTORS SERIES" WITH KUNTZ

New York music studio Q Department has launched an invite-only "avant garde" evening of musical journeying called The Directors Series. The inaugural event on June 17 was curated by Tom Kuntz. The evening began with the MJZ director dragging a six-foot tall wizard on a full moon set as a signifier of his three-hour "musical journey" and ended with an impromptu drum solo by Michel Gondry. The next event will feature Happy's Guy Shelmerdine. Other directors slated to participate are RSA's Ben Dickinson, Tronic, Marie Hyon & Marco Spiers of Psyop, Little Minx's Malik Hassan Sayeed, Hungry Man's Nanette Burnstein, Mike Figgis and Anonymous Content's Joseph Kosinski.

Top Spot Shoot Magazine. "The stirring operatic track that accompanies "Opera" is key to telling the tragic love story. Composer Drazen Bosnjak of the New York office of Q Department took on the task of re-arranging a duet from "Cavelleria Rusticana" and making it work within the context of a mere :30 format. He then recorded the piece with tenor Kip Wilborn and soprano Julianna DiGiacomo. Nicolas-Troyan and Ledru said they found the music to be a great inspiration as they worked to bring the story of the bee and the flower to life in dramatic, operatic fashion."

Adicolor's series of podcast films were created by some of advertising's hottest directors. They insist the project was not a commercial campaign, but that doesn't really matter. The project, created by Idealogue, rolled out over seven weeks this spring, caused just the right buzz with just the right audience, found a welcoming home on YouTube and wildly surpassed download expectation, cementing Adidas as a cool, aspirational brand. Traditional advertising? No. A glimpse at the future? An Adicolored one indeed.

Q Department is pleased to announce an alliance with composer Greg Weeks. Q Department and Greg first connected on the adicolor Podcast campaign for adidas. Greg's song "Made" from his album Awake Like Sleep provided director Charlie White with an addictive creepy teenage anthem for adicolor pink, which received global acclaim.

Greg's impressive reportage includes: Espers, an acid-folk sextet on the front lines of the New Weird America/Freak-Folk "movement" recently featured with Feathers, Vetiver and Jolie Holland in the NY Times; Grass, an acid-rock groove band; Superstarshine, an analog synth pop duo and The Valerie Project, an orchestral/prog sextet whose first foray is providing a live soundtrack to a lost Czech masterpiece.

The multi-talented Weeks also acts as both a Producer & Sound Engineer in his 24 track analog studio "Hexham Head" in Philly; which has thus far seen the likes of Espers, Margaret Baird, Marissa Nadler, Fern Knight, Rusalnaia, and Orion Rigel Dommise.

With superb music and/or sound design treatments for MHD's "Crow", Adidas's "Modular Man" and the Adicolor films ("White", "Green", "Red" and "Blue") all issued in the last three months, Q Department founder Drazen Bosnjak has dramatically asserted himself as the go-to guy for the progressive, art-minded creative. As equally versed and interested in the outer limits of digital sound manipulation as he is in classical music's archetypal patterns, Bosnjak's compositional range extends far and deep. L'ENFER debuts at Toronto International Film Festival Friday 8-17 September 2005. Three sisters who share a connection to a violent incident from their childhood reunite for the chance to come to terms with their past. L'Enfer(2005) Directed by Danis Tanovic (Oscar Winning Director of No Man's Land) debuts its worldwide premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. Q Department signs composer Simon Johns, bass player for Stereolab. Simon's extraordinary career started with a one-off single with My Bloody Valentine drummer Colm o'Ciosoig under the name Clearspot. The Clearspot single led him to Stereolab who approached Simon for session work on the album "Cobra & Phases Group Play Voltages in the Milky Night" and subsequently hired him full time in 1999. He has been with the band ever since.

Internationale Kurzfilmtage Oberhausen: 5 May – 10 May 2005
The world's longest standing international short film competition, Internationale Kurzfilmtage Oberhausen, received 4,000 entries from more than 87 countries. SONY & Y&R's Fourth Annual "Dreams" Program invites directors to create short films using Sony's 24p HD cameras. One of the featured shorts was "Little Pony", directed by Stylewar/SMUGGLER (Filip Engstrom) for which Q Department created the original music, music licensing and sound design.
